Marking the National Day of Action Against Bullying
Today, on the National Day of Action Against Bullying, we reaffirm that every employee deserves a workplace where they feel safe, respected, and valued. Bullying can take many forms, but prevention is always more effective than cure. Employers who implement clear, inclusive anti-bullying policies not only protect their people but also foster a culture of respect, trust, and productivity.
The Code of Practice for Employers and Employees on the Prevention and Resolution of Bullying at Work (in effect since 23 December 2020) offers a clear framework. Here’s how employers in Ireland can put it into practice.
1. Start with a Strong Policy
Your policy should be written, signed, and dated by senior management, developed in consultation with employees, easy to understand, and regularly updated. It should commit to:
- A workplace free from bullying.
- Protecting dignity, respect, and equality.
- Fair, confidential handling of complaints.
- Disciplinary action where necessary (including for vexatious complaints).
2. Define Bullying Clearly
Explain what bullying is, give relevant examples, name a contact person for concerns, and make clear that protection applies to all workplace relationships—including off-site and social events.
3. Assign Responsibilities
- Management: lead by example, promote awareness, act early.
- Employees: support prevention measures and treat others with respect.
- Non-employees: held to the same standards, with consequences for breaches.
4. Communicate and Train
Include anti-bullying training in staff induction, provide regular refreshers, and display summaries where employees and visitors can see them. Use multiple channels—manuals, newsletters, notice boards, and workshops.
5. Monitor and Review
Record incidents, provide ongoing training (especially for supervisors), offer support to those affected, and review policies regularly to reflect changes in law, case law, or workplace experience.
Building a Safer Workplace
Preventing bullying is an ongoing commitment. By embedding respect, monitoring behaviours, and ensuring effective communication, employers can create a culture where everyone can thrive.
